Reputation points are very simple; they reflect how much your character is known. You gain five reputation points per post-- even if it's OOC. This means you can go on harder quests, update your character's rank and (later) buy cool things! Some areas might be off limits for those who don't have enough reputation points-- so work on getting your reputation points up! Below is an outline of how reputation points work (could be counted as 'rank').
The people you've lived with your entire life know that you're a good kid- maybe you've helped your fair share of old ladies cross the street or even saved the town's barbeque from a pack of hungry dogs! Either way, you're on your way for good.
100-500 Rep: Regional Hero
So, you've gotten out a bit, saved a princess from a tower or maybe even stopped an assassination plot mid-action. You've gotten yourself a bit of fame, but don't let it get to your head. It's not like you've slain dragons or anything.
500-1,000 Rep: True Hero
So maybe you've slain a dragon, maybe you rescued a village of people from some unimaginable beast twice your size and covered in thick, scaly armor. You've gained the recognition and adoration of the people around you. The entire realm has heard of your good deeds!
1,000-3,000 Rep: Valliant Knight
Your name has finally reached the places it matters; the realm's palace. You're known for being strong, brave, amazing. The people love you and the royals might even throw you a feast! You may be officially knighted for your efforts, maybe even promised the hand of a beautiful princess!
3,000-10,000 Rep: Worldly Hero
Your name has left the realm and stretched into others! All over, people speak of your good deeds, your valliant efforts, your strength, your physique. You're truly famous, now, and there's nothing you can't do!
10,000+ Rep: Legendary Hero
You've finally done it; your name has reached the Grand Council itself, and you've gained recognition as one of the few legendary heroes. You may get quests to stop others from unleashing chaos- you may get quests to slay any unimaginably strong beast. You're truly unstoppable now.

Villainous:
The people from whence you've came avoid you like the plague- maybe a few of the kids shout curses at you and throw pebbles. You're known for petty crimes; shoplifting, stealing, pushing old ladies defenselessly into the street while the local hero swoops in to the rescue- that kind of thing.
100-500 Rep: Regional Baddie
You've finally crawled from the pit of despair you once called home, maybe locked a princess in a tower, stole some ancient artifact, gathered a small pool of henchmen and attempted to assassinate a baron or lord; people are talking, but they might have some trouble remembering your long, creepy name. So you're getting there.
500-1,000 Rep: True Villain
People tremble at the sound of your name. Henchmen flock to aid you in whatever evil scheme you've currently started. Heroes seek to destroy you, lords and barons seek to have you destroyed. You're a menace to society and the whole realm is seeking to have your head.
1,000-3,000 Rep: Vile Scum
Your name has finally reached the places it matters; the realm's palace. You're known for being strong, terrifying, horrifying. The people hate you and the royals wish to have you decimated at all costs! You may even be able to kidnap a princess and force her into marrying you!
3,000-10,000 Rep: Worldly Villain
Your name has left the realm and stretched into others! All over, people speak of your misdeeds, your vile efforts, your strength, your physique. You're truly infamous, now, and there's nothing you can't do!
10,000+ Rep: Legendary Villain
You've finally done it; your name has reached the Grand Council itself, and you've gained recognition as one of the few legendary villains. You may have a shot at unleashing chaos- you may be able to tame an unimaginably strong beast. You're truly unstoppable now![/ul][/ul]
